Since 2015, Latvia coordinates the cooperation between the European Union and Central Asian countries in the field of vocational education
During the Latvian Presidency of the Council of the European Union (EU), one of the events was the First Meeting of Ministers for Education of the Member States of the EU and of the Central Asian countries. The meeting was held in Riga, Latvia on 25 and 26 June 2015 and was organised by the Latvian Presidency of the Council of the EU in collaboration with the European Commission and the European External Action Service.
The meeting resulted in the adaption of Joint Communiqué of the First Meeting of the EU and Central Asian Ministers for Education on cooperation in higher and vocational education and the indicative roadmap of activities for 2015-2018. The activities will be implemented in terms of the EU-funded programme Central Asian Education Platform (2015-2018) and the EU programme Erasmus+.
The cooperation in vocational education between the regions on behalf of the EU will be coordinated by Latvia. Already in 2015 in this area certain activities are planned concerning qualification and diploma recognition, development of qualifications frameworks, quality assurance, identification of employers’ needs, as well as development of mobility projects for study visits and practice training in the EU countries for Central Asian vocational education teachers and students in order to promote students’ employability and teachers’ professional development.
