Results of competition “Profs 2011”
“Profs” is a competition for vocational school students concerning work rights and safety, which was arranged by the Free Trade Union Confederation of Latvia (LBAS) with the support of the European Social Fund. The organization of this competition is supported by the Ministry of Education and Science, the Ministry of Welfare, the State Labour Inspectorate and the Employers’ Confederation of Latvia. LBAS is the largest non-governmental organisation in Latvia representing the interests and rights of trade union members and employees on the sectoral and inter-sectoral level.
This competition aims at promoting vocational school students’ understanding about work rights and safety, as well as raising awareness among young people concerning trade unions. This year (2011) the contest was held for the fifth time, and since its beginning in 2006, more than 7,000 young people have been involved in this event. During the competition the participants showed that they are well familiar with the Labour Law, know work safety regulations and apply very creative approach to the tasks.
This year, more than 1,600 vocational education students from across Latvia had applied for the participation in this competition. The top ten students from each school competed in the regional semi-finals and after close contest, the winners met in the final competition in Riga where they demonstrated their knowledge of work rights, safety and social dialogue issues.
For the title of “Profs 2011” five teams from all the Latvian regions competed in the final contest (9.12.2011):
- Zemgale (central part) – Vecbebri Vocational Secondary School (Vecbebru Profesionālā vidusskola);
- Vidzeme (northern-eastern part) – Ogre State Technical School (Ogres Valsts tehnikums);
- Kurzeme (western part) – Liepaja State Technical School (Liepājas Valsts tehnikums);
- Latgale (southern-eastern part) – Austrumlatgale Secondary School (Austrumlatgales Profesionālā vidusskola);
- Riga (capital city region) – Bulduri Gardening Secondary School (Bulduru dārzkopības vidusskola).
In the final knowledge of students was tested in dynamic and attractive tasks – students had to show their knowledge about safety signs and the use of personal safety equipment, as well as calculate salaries, identify violations of work rights and accomplish other tasks.
As the smartest in the field of work rights and safety issues, students from the Liepaja State Technical School appeared in the final competition of “Profs 2011”.
