Quality award “Wings 2011” for the EU Lifelong Learning Programme projects
On December 9 (2011) during a special ceremony the minister of education and science Mr Roberts Ķīlis and the director of State Education Development Agency (VIAA) Ms Dita Traidās presented the EU Lifelong Learning Programme quality award “Wings 2011” to the most successful projects that have been implemented in previous years.
Results of competition “Profs 2011”
“Profs” is a competition for vocational school students concerning work rights and safety, which was arranged by the Free Trade Union Confederation of Latvia (LBAS) with the support of the European Social Fund. The organization of this competition is supported by the Ministry of Education and Science, the Ministry of Welfare, the State Labour Inspectorate and the Employers’ Confederation of Latvia. LBAS is the largest non-governmental organisation in Latvia representing the interests and rights of trade union members and employees on the sectoral and inter-sectoral level.
The programmes for centralized professional qualification examinations (2011/2012) are elaborated
The National Centre for Education (VISC) has developed Programmes of study year 2011/2012 for centralized professional qualification examinations in 62 professional qualifications. Programmes were elaborated in accordance with the Cabinet of Ministers Regulations (30.08.2011) “The Procedure of professional qualification examinations in accredited vocational education programmes”, clause 20.
Latvian project promoters in the education exhibition “Expro” in Tallinn (1.-3.12.2011)
“Expro” is an annual exhibition and workshops about the European Union (EU) Lifelong Learning and Nordplus Programmes project results implemented in the Baltic States. This year the events took place in Tallinn on December 1-3 (2011).
Conference “Better Regulation for the Efficient Management and Partnerships” (1.-2.12.2011)
On December 1-2, 2011 the State Chancellery, the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Regional Development and the Employers’ Confederation of Latvia jointly organize annual conference “Better Regulation for the Efficient Management and Partnerships”, which invites to a discussion representatives from the state institutions and local governments and business experts.
New Cabinet Regulations regarding professional qualifications, in which centralized professional qualification exams are taken (1.09.2011)
By 1st September 2011, new Cabinet of Ministers Regulations No.664 “The list of professional qualifications, in which the centralized professional qualification examinations are taken to obtain them” (approved on August 30, 2011) came into force. These Regulations include the list of qualifications (in total 62 professional qualifications), in which students have to pass relevant centralized professional qualification exam.

On 1.09.2011, new Cabinet of Ministers Regulations about the procedure of professional qualification examinations entered into force
On 30 August 2011 new Cabinet of Ministers No.662 “The Procedure of professional qualification examinations in accredited vocational education programmes” were issued. These Regulations stipulate the organization of professional qualification examinations, including centralized professional qualification exams, in accredited vocational education programmes.

Six new vocational education competence centres opened
On 16 August 2011, the government granted status of vocational education competence centre to six vocational education establishments starting from the 1st September 2011. The named schools are:
- Rīga State Technical School (Rīgas Valsts tehnikums),
- Liepaja State Technical School (Liepājas Valsts tehnikums),
- Ventspils Vocational Secondary School (Ventspils Profesionālā vidusskola),
- State Kandava Agricultural Technical School (Valsts Kandavas Lauksaimniecības tehnikums),
- Riga Technical College (Rīgas Tehniskā koledža), and
- Jelgava Crafts Secondary School (Jelgavas Amatniecības vidusskola).
Informative report of the Ministry of Education and Science to the government about the reform progress in vocational education (12.07.2011)
This informative report describes three directions of the reforms in vocational education:
- The reform of vocational education content;
- Continuous education and professional development for vocational education teachers;
- The optimization and differentiation of vocational education network.
NCP-VET-CO project – Cooperation network between NCPs (2009-2011)
Linking the national qualifications to the European Qualifications Framework (EQF) is a complicated and time-consuming process, which may be made more profound by sharing and exchanging experience between various countries. The cross-border collaboration is particularly important for the institutions, which are responsible for arranging the referencing in their countries.
